Canton Color Tour Jazz Series 7 Weeks of Jazz

The Canton DDA in cooperation with Canton Leisure Services and the Canton Chamber of Commerce is excited to host the tenth season of the popular “Canton Color Tour” live jazz concert series. These free concerts will take place in the parking lots of various shopping centers in the color blocks along Canton’s Ford Road. Bring your lawn chair and get ready to sit back and enjoy! About the Jazz Artists

Dal Bouey is a talented performer, singer, dancer, percussionist and actress with a wide vocal range. Known for her exciting live performances and sensual dance moves, she mesmerizes her audiences. Bouey has toured extensively throughout the Orient and United States and has opened for countless major musical acts. She enjoys performing at casinos, large sporting events and festivals throughout
the Midwest.

The Brothers Groove is a unique funk and jazz trio that combines dance moves with a bluesy, smooth sound. Chris Codish, on keyboard and vocals, has an impressive background as the composer of songs like “Pressure Cookers, Iron Pimps, and Beautiful women from other Realms.” James Simonson on bass and Skeeto Valdez on drums are also explosive, energetic soloists in their own right. As a group they’ve completed three CDs (“Clamp It Down” “Layin’ in the Cut” and “So glad you Came”) and have individually and collectively won over 40 Detroit Music Awards.

Gerard Gibbs entertains nationally on the concert circuit along with sax men Marion Meadows, Ronnie Laws and James Carter. He is also a part of the hot contemporary jazz group Pieces of a Dream. Gibbs works as an architectural engineer for the City of Detroit by day and leads two jazz bands at night and on weekends. He plays keyboards in his contemporary jazz group, RYZ (pronounced RISE) and organ for Gerard Gibbs & ORGANized Crime. Gerard recently finished his debut CD with his organ trio in honor of his first mentor, the late Richard “Groove” Holmes.

Herbie Russ possesses the great talent of improvisation. In high school, Russ’s band director wrote arrangements around his solos. Later he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan where he studied classical music, blues and jazz. Russ went on to join a Vegas-style band as a saxophone player. Without acquiring any formal voice lessons, he then began singing with the band. Russ had another lucky break and began singing in commercials. He was playing sax for someone else’s recording and the studio engineer persuaded him to record a car dealership commercial after hearing him sing into the microphone to check it. Since then, he has recorded several CDs and numerous commercials including some for AT&T, Chevrolet and Ford.

Charles & Gwen Scales have toured internationally but decided to make Detroit their home. Gwen sings and writes and Charles plays keyboards, arranges music, produces and writes. Gwen’s love of music began at an early age. She was inspired by entertainers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson. Charles also had a great love of music early, which resulted in a degree in Composition and Arrangement from U of M. The couple lives by a great motto, “Whatever happens, we have our family, our music, and each other.”

Urban Jazz Coalition has consistently delivered outstanding live performances. Recently, the group made a big impression with traditional and satellite/internet radio stations launching their last four CD releases. UJC’s music has also been featured in network television programming, international film soundtracks, advertising campaigns, and as part of an eclectic group of artists on a Gospel/Jazz compilation project released by Capitol/EMI Records. The popular group can stand-alone but are also in-demand as a back up group in the smooth jazz genre for a number of top smooth jazz artists.

Yancyy, while an accomplished saxophonist, often entertains audiences with his exceptional talents on clarinet, flute and piano. He is also a gifted composer and arranger, contributing keyboards and vocals on his first solo release. Yancyy is a proven performer for music enthusiasts of every generation. He has opened for many contemporary music greats, including Stevie Wonder, Average White Band, Temptations, Neville Brothers, Jean Luc Ponty, George Benson, Four Tops, Yellowjackets, Pieces of A Dream, Earl Klugh, Gerald Levert, Jeffrey Osborne, Atlantic Star, Ohio Players, Kem, as well as peers, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and George Howard.
